Welcome

Welcome to the home page of the "HSAPS Market Analysis" project. The full title of the project is "Market potential analysis for the introduction of hydrogen energy systems in stand alone power systems". The project is working to establish realistic market development projections for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in small to medium sized remote power applications.

A large number of stand alone power systems (SAPS) are installed around Europe. These systems provide power to technical installations and communities in areas which are not connected to the regional or national power grid. An increasing number of SAPSs include renewable energy technologies, i.e. solar or wind power, most often in combination with diesel generators and/or batteries for backup power, but the majority of larger SAPS are still based on fossil fuel power generation. Replacing diesel generators and batteries in SAPS by fuel cells running on locally produced hydrogen would diminish fossil fuel dependence, improve environmental standards, and possibly reduce operation and maintenance costs. The fuel cell technology is developing fast and the SAPS market is believed to be a market segment where this new technology can be competitive in the near future.

The project is running from 1. February 2002 to 31. January 2004 under the EU Altener program. The partners are Institute for Energy Tecnology, Norway, Trama TecnoAmbiental, Spain, Centre for Renewable Energy Sources, Greece, and Econnect Ltd, UK.

HSAPS workshop
The HSAPS consortium organises a Market Analysis workshop in Grenoble 4th of September 2003. The aim of the workshop is to dissimitate the results form the project on the market potential for hydrogen technologies for energy storage in stand-alone power systems based on renewable energy sources and to have gather all interested parties for a general discussion on the challenges / barriers for introduction of hydrogen into this early market segment.

The presentations given at the workshop may be download here.
